This picture was drawn from a photograph taken by Richard Avedon, an amazing, belated photographer.  He found her working as a cashier in Giddings, Texas and was probably struck by her beauty and strength.  Her face is giving slightly conflicting messages, because on the one hand she is smiling to be friendly to the photographer she has just met while on the other hand she is a little confused and suspicious of the whole idea of being photographed by a stranger.
